How solar works
Solar panels generate electricity by harnessing the photons produced by the sun. Solar panels are made up of solar cells; multiple panels can be wired together to create a solar array. When sunlight hits a solar cell, the photons knock electrons loose from their atoms. These free electrons are converted into a DC current, which then passes through an inverter and becomes an AC current, capable of powering your home. Any excess energy captured during peak sunlight hours is stored in a battery – which gives your home continued access to electricity, even at night. The more panels you have, the more electricity you can generate and store.
Cost of solar
Solar panels are an investment that can pay off exponentially in the long run – but they’re not inexpensive, and costs will vary significantly from one state to another. It’s important to do plenty of research to determine your savings potential and the overall value of the investment before taking the plunge. Thankfully, solar is becoming more affordable each year. Advancements in manufacturing techniques have also made PV panels more efficient, capable of generating more electricity per unit. As clean, renewable energy gets more time in the national spotlight, we hope to see more states implement incentive programs that make solar energy a reality for an even broader population.
Installation Process
There’s more to installing solar than mounting the panels to your roof. The entire process typically takes a few months, beginning with an initial consultation and wrapping up with a city inspection once everything’s complete. Once we’ve performed an in-home inspection and determined the number of panels you need, we’ll get to work obtaining building permits from the city. Then, the installation itself takes only a few days. Don’t let the timeline scare you: We’ve been helping homeowners set up solar panels in Colorado for years. We’ll take care of all the details and paperwork so you can focus on enjoying your soon-to-be-solar-powered home.

Colorado ranked 11th in the nation for installed solar capacity: As of 2016, the state had 925.8 MW of solar energy installed. It’s easy to see why, with excellent sun exposure across most parts of the state and numerous local programs that incentivize the adoption of renewable energy. Colorado’s net metering program, for example, is one of the best in the country. The state mandates that utility companies pay homeowners directly for the net excess energy their solar energy systems produce. This means that some individuals can not only eliminate their electricity spending, but even turn a profit off their solar panels.
The cost of solar in Colorado
Many different variables will influence the exact cost of materials, installation, and labor for your solar panel system. The size of your home, type and size of your roof, number of panels, permitting costs, and state and local incentives will all have an impact on the final total. The only way to know exactly how much solar will cost for your unique home is by contacting us to schedule an inspection. We know it can be helpful to get an idea of the regional data, though: According to EnergySage, as of 2020, the average cost to install residential solar panels in Colorado ranged from $13,388 to $18,112 after solar tax credits. When you work with Noble Solar, we’ll include the cost of labor in our initial quote to make the breakdown as simple as possible.
The solar installation process in Colorado
Installing solar panels in Colorado isn’t all that different from the installation process in other states. However, Colorado’s weather does limit the time frame in which installation can be safely performed: If you’re considering switching to solar, we recommend scheduling your initial consultation in the spring (or ever earlier) so that permits can be obtained in enough time for a summer installation date. In general, Colorado’s climate, open land, and sun exposure makes most homes in the state excellent candidates for solar power.
